The Space full time dance course consists of five core components:
1. Dance Training
Our top class teaching faculty will train you to world class standard. Headed by the inspirational Ian Knowles, our faculty includes Kim Adam, Stephen Agisilaou, Will Jones, Oleg Timursin, John Bolton, Alex Bryan, Vince Calingasan, Deb Cantoni, Shane Clarke, Adrian Dimetrievich, Phillip Haddad, Mark Hill, Tia Jordan, Etienne Khoo, Yvette Lee, Paul Malek, Sue-Ellen Shook and many more. This great staff will take you for focused structured training in styles including : Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop, Lyrical, Contemporary, Latin American, Salsa, Tango, Tap, Adagio, Acrobatics and Le Bop.
The number of students in the course is restricted and entry is by audition only to ensure everyone is of an appropriate standard. These two conditions of entry ensure that our teachers will be able to provide personal attention to guide you to the next step in your dance career.
2. International Connection
To make sure you’re being trained to world class standard, we are bringing out choreographers from the US and the UK for intensive week-at-a-time training! International artists confirmed so far include Tovaris Wilson, Michelle Zeitlin, Robert Hallak and Adam Parson. These artists will provide amazing networking opportunities and a constant reminder of what the best in the world have to offer!
3. Choreography & Artistic Direction
This component focuses on musicality and the development of a thorough understanding of how your body moves. You will learn to extend that movement to its full potential so that your choreography will take your audience on the journey you intend. To further develop you as an artist, you will be required to regularly create your own work throughout the course - sometimes in the style of another choreographer and sometimes in your own style.
This encourages students to “try on” the styles of a variety of great dancers and choreographers (both old and new) in order to find a style that really suits your body, dance facility, personality and taste. This practical approach to studying the history of dance will stand you in great stead to understand what has come before, in order to move forward!
4. Production & Stage Craft
And all of this work will be constantly honed on stage. Every 8 weeks, there will be a public performance of what you have been working on, showcasing both student choreographed work and the choreography of the local and international teachers and artists. This will give you a basic understanding of all aspects of the stage and performance - from technical areas such as lighting and sound to costume, stage direction and publicising and producing the work. To ensure you are progressing appropriately, you will be individually assessed at regular intervals and given feedback on your progress in a formal, structured manner.
5. Living as an Artist
Finally, throughout the course, we will be exploring what it means and how to live as an Artist. How to: audition for work; create your own work; communicate with and invoice employers; market yourself and your work; prevent and manage injuries; eat properly for a dancing career; and how to be true to yourself as an artist.
